A Rational Approach
Rational Therapeutics™, Inc. (RTI) is a free-standing research laboratory located in Long Beach, CA. Founded in 1993 by Dr. Robert Nagourney, a prominent hematologist/oncologist, RTI "functionally profiles" individual patient's living tumor. The ex vivo analysis (EVA) of human tumors provides a novel, real-time snapshot of how human tumors behave within their natural microenvironment. Each microspheroid examined contains all the complex elements of tumor biosystems that are found in the human body. By examining small clusters of cancer cells, or microspheroids in their native state, Rational Therapeutics measures the tumor's behavior in response to drug exposure and identifies which chemotherapy drug or drug combination induces cell death. This will determine the most effective drug/combination for each individual patient.
Despite the appeal of gene and protein based methods (utilizing dead, formaldehyde preserved cells), these techniques cannot measure the complex behavior of cancers in response to injury. "Functional Profiling" is the only approach that can answer these complex questions.
