(Liver Cancer)
In February 2009 my discomfort began. It was unlike anything I'd experienced before and ultimately led me to the doctor's office. Blood tests, ultrasounds and biopsies. I was poked and prodded for 2 months and 12 doctor visits before we received the fateful phone call.
On the morning of April Fool's Day 2009 I was diagnosed with (liver) cancer. The irony was beyond my comprehension. And the weight of this cruel joke would change my life forever.
I was referred to oncologist Robert Nagourney by a close friend. He explained my options and how his cancer fighting technique would customize my treatments. Dr. Nagourney analyzed the tumors from my biopsies, in the lab, to determine which drug combinations would kill my specific cancer. And after just one week of aggressive chemotherapy we began seeing results. Wow, I was so excited.
As frightened as the process had me, it was a conversation with Dr. Nagourney several weeks into my sessions that scared me most. "When we met I thought you were at death's door and I was afraid that you were too sick to treat," he began. "Your reaction to the treatments is nothing short of miraculous. And if we used standard therapies I don't think things would have gone so well." My most PET scan of September 16, 2009 states, "the previously described large area of increased FDG accumulation in the left lobe of the liver has largely, if not completely resolved."
By customizing the therapies to fight my specific cancer rather than general cancer treatment protocols, Dr. Nagourney and his team saved my life. I want to share my story so that others fighting cancer can see that there is hope and we're all in this together. I want the world to know that Dr Nagourney's methods work. They worked for me. And maybe by sharing I can encourage somebody else to speak out and recognize the success of these analyses.
